Hesket House, built circa 1780,
started life as "The Steam Packet Inn" the original hotel for the
port at Fishers Cross, later named Port Carlisle, where such
distinguished visitors as Woodrow Wilson have been a guest.
The Grade II listed building has been a farm and
family home since around the turn of the century, situated in an A.O.N.B
conservation area and built actually on the site of the Hadrians Wall Vallum,
with Roman altar stone built in to the front wall above the door, Hesket House
is perfectly situated for guests who are walking or cycling the National Trail,
bird/wildlife explorers or anyone just enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the
beautiful Solway coastline.

Port Carlisle is a very
small village on the Solway Coast.
Hesket House is situated at the coastal end of the village,
with fine views across
the Solway Firth to Scotland.
This is an ideal base for discovering
the Northern Fells of the Lake District National Park or for a quiet
break in the countryside.
Keswick is a short scenic drive away. On the way, you will pass
beautiful Bassenthwaite Water, famous for it's
Ospreys.
The historic city of Carlisle with it's castle, attractive shopping
centre, and plenty of lively entertainment is 12 miles along the
coast road.
The
Solway Coast is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. |
B & B only 1 mile
from Bowness.
The route of
the Hadrian's Wall National Trail passes through Port Carlisle before terminating
just under a mile away in the picturesque village of
Bowness-On-Solway.Port
Carlisle and Bowness-on-Solway are also on the
Cumbria Cycle
Way which is a 260-mile
way-marked route around the county.
The route takes in all of Cumbria's interesting towns and villages.
Many of our guests are cyclists, enjoying our quiet country lanes
along the Solway Firth coast..

From Port Carlisle, it's a 20 minute
stroll along the coast to Bowness on Solway.
A small shelter
in Bowness marks the end of the Hadrian's Wall path.
Find your final passport stamp in the shelter, and rest your weary
legs whilst you admire the view across the Solway Firth to Bonnie Scotland. |
The Solway estuary is a very important stopping off point for
migratory birds, and a breeding ground for many waders and other
birds.
Very large flocks of geese and swans can be seen overhead throughout the
winter months moving between feeding areas in the countryside and
their evening roosts.
The area is very popular with bird watchers who come to see the large variety of waders and
other birds both migrant and resident that frequent the Solway.
Due to the strong tidal currents and
shallow depth of the water, the Solway is almost totally
un-fished on the English side of the estuary.
Some of our visitors have seen porpoises close to the shore.
Local fishermen using their
traditional Haaf Netting method of catching migratory salmon can be
often be seen standing waste deep in the shallows. |
